With its layers of texture and color, “Emerge” helps us peer
through the challenge of plastic and textile waste to imagine
a new way forward. Inspired by ceremonial shields created
by the Asmat people of West Papua, Asmat Shields give
protection from both the physical and spiritual powers of the
enemy. They often represent an ancestor; the ancestor›s
spirit is believed to be present in the shield and make the
owner 昀椀erce, powerful and invincible. For Lombok-based
Plastik Kembali, this inspires a powerful metaphor for
protection when venturing out on the surf. Created from
recycled material on upcycled surfboards, the message
extends to open a conversation about protecting the surf
itself from the enemy of “plastic.”
