Oceans Over Oil
Artwork size: 168 x 130 x 5cm
Materials: Recycled plastic, waste textile, cotton
thread, water-based black paint, water-based
clear coat, wire, metal.
“Oceans Over Oil” is a thought-provoking 昀椀ber art and video installation
that confronts the profound environmental crisis caused by the oil industry,
particularly its impact on marine ecosystems.
The centerpiece of the exhibit is an abstract 昀椀ber art piece representing a
coral reef, meticulously crafted from recycled plastic and waste textile —
materials derived from petrochemicals, symbolizing the very issue at hand.
The artwork has further been doused in thick black paint representing oil
and petrochemicals — the building blocks of 99.99% of plastics in our
world and a core culprit in climate change.
As viewers engage with the video and artwork, they witness a dramatic
transformation: a visceral act serving as a powerful metaphor for the
destructive effects of oil spills, runoff, pollution and climate change,
illustrating how the oil industry is slowly suffocating our oceans.
“Oceans Over Oil” is not merely an aesthetic experience; it is a call to
conversation and awareness. By juxtaposing the beauty of marine life with
the harsh reality of oil’s impact on the environment, the installation seeks to
engage audiences in a dialogue about sustainability, climate change and
the urgent need to protect our oceans.
Through this immersive experience, Plastik Kembali invites viewers to
confront the truth about our relationship with fossil fuels and to consider
the collective responsibility we share in safeguarding our planet’s future.
